St. George Tucker / as a testimonial of his / faithful & arduous work / while a student at the / Norfolk Academy." Beverley D. Tucker (1846-1930), son of Nathaniel Beverley Tucker and the second bishop of the Episcopal Diocese of Southern Virginia, served in the Confederate army during the Civil War's latter stages before attending the Virginia Theological Seminary, 1871-1873, and then serving several Virginia Episcopal churches, including St. Paul's in Norfolk, 1882-1906, and as bishop, 1918-1930. His son Henry St. George Tucker (1874-1959), to whom this book is inscribed, served as the 19th Presiding Bishop of the Episcopal Church, 1938-1946. Hinges cracking, a little shaken, but a good copy with a nice Virginia association. Original black and gilt-stamped brown cloth (rubbed, spine ends a little frayed), top edge gilt. (10888).
