First edition. 8vo. 221 pp. After emigrating from France to the United States in 1816, Crozet taught at West Point and moved to Virginia in the 1820s to work as an engineer on the expanding railroad system, then helped found the Virginia Military Institute, designing its academic program and military organization; a series of tunnels he designed and helped build in the 1840s and 1850s allowed the railroad to cross the Blue Ridge Mountains.
