WILLIAM HENRY HARRISON/ Ninth President of the United States [caption title under the portrait in the lower margin].

New York: Lith & Pub by N Currier, 2 Spruce St., NY, nd [early 1840s]. Color lithograph portrait of William Henry Harrison framed by a thin double-rule, 11 1/4 x 9 inches on a larger sheet, 18 3/4 x 13 1/2 inches, the president seated at his writing desk, quill in his right hand, his left cradling his sword. Harrison (1773-1841; 9th President of the United States, 1841) was the last president born in a British colony, Virginia, the son of a signer of the Declaration of Independence, Benjamin Harrison, and the grandfather of another Benjamin Harrison, the 23rd President of the United States. He received his early schooling at home, Berkeley Plantation on the James River, before attending Hampden-Sydney College and the University of Pennsylvania, which he abandoned to begin his military career in 1791. He achieved fame as a hero in the War of 1812 and parlayed a career in Northwest Territory and Ohio politics and diplomatic positions into a run for President of the United State as a Whig in 1836; defeated by Martin Van Buren, he was successful in 1840 ("Tippecanoe and Tyler Too"), but his term was cut short when he died of pneumonia or a fever a month after his inauguration in March, 1841. Richly colored, a very good example. Several spots in the margins. (10783). Item #64428
