First edition. 4to. 5 pp. Cover illustrated with a lithographed scene (Bufford's Lith., Boston) of Eliza escaping across the river skipping from ice floe to ice floe, an overseer on the rear shore with whip in hand, an African-American behind him with arms raised in alarm, trees and the plantation house in the distance, a quote from the book below the image: "God help me. I crossed the river on the ice; for they were behind me -- right behind me and there was no other way" (Uncle Tom's Cabin, Vol. I, p. 126). First line: "The ice is floating in the stream."
