CONCERNING FESTIVITIES IN LOWELL, MASSACHUSETTS, in a letter to his mother.

July 6, 1858. Four (4) pp. ALS from C.L. Anderson to his mother. 8 x 10 in., approx. 600 words. Very good, legible. Charles writes of the interesting post-July Fourth doings in Lowell, Massachusetts: "Joe Pentlands Circus came into town on Saturday morning and remained till that evening, catching the quarters from some probably who had better been someplace else. Mr. King was here from Providence R.I. with his big Balloon to interest the multitude and get some money. The balloon was inflated about eleven o clock and was about as large as a small house. In the afternoon he made several ascensions as far up as the length of his rope would permit (1000 feet). C. M. Whipple J.C. Ayer & wife and many others embraced the opportunity of ascending. The sight from the height of a 1000 feet was said to be sublime." Anderson also mentions that the Temperance Band of Hope, "comprising the children in the public schools came out in the morning." He mentions names and activities of friends and relatives. Item #64274
