Stevens (1833-1902), a native of Vermont, followed his bookseller brother Henry to England and spent 30 years "preparing a chronological and alphabetical index of American state papers in English, French, Dutch, and Spanish archives, covering the period 1763-1784, and prepared more than 2000 facsimiles of important American historical manuscripts in European archives and relating to the period between 1773-1783" (Wikipedia). Bookplate on front pastedown, owner's signature on verso of front endpaper, but a very good untrimmed copy. Original gilt-stamped decorated burgundy cloth (spine somewhat faded). (10552).
