Inscribed on pencil at the head of the front wrapper "Chas. Brooks / from the author." Brooks, like the author's father, Joshua Bates, was a Massachusetts clergyman, temperance advocate, and supporter of efforts to colonize American Negroes in Africa. Sabin 3945. Turnbull III, p. 137: "[Originally] printed in the International Magazine, vol. 4, 1851." Relatively widely held in institutional collections (OCLC locates about 30 copies), but scarce in trade.
