The other five titles, from the same publisher, include: THE CHILD'S STORY OF BIRDS, BEASTS AND REPTILES by Frederick Lonnkvist; GREAT AMERICAN MEN & WOMEN FOR LITTLE AMERICAN BOYS & GIRLS [with the explanation prospectus, printed on pink paper, tipped in]; THE TEACHINGS OF JESUS AND THE LIVES OF THE APOSTLES; THE NEW POPULAR RECITER AND BOOK OF ELOCUTION by Frances Putnam Pogle and George Vickers [with the explanation prospectus, printed on pink paper, tipped in]; THIS COUNTRY OF OURS: ITS HISTORY AND ACHIEVEMENTS by Charles Morris [with the explanation prospectus, printed on pink paper, tipped in; and a second copy of the same prospectus bound out of order in this sample book]. Also tipped in is a prospectus for a new book by Charles Morris [but no sample extract], entitled "Our New History of the United States is Up-To-Date." Illustration for an "elegant Keratol morocco binding" for this title is included. Several pages of lined paper at the back of this collection, intended for subscribers names, are unused.
The group bound into a plain black cloth, with bottom and fore-edge flaps (top flap lacking). A portion of the final title is laid in loose, and a few other leaves are loose with the inevitable fraying, a few pages with chipping or shallow tears to edges.
Keith Arbour's "Canvassing Books, Sample Books, and Subscription Publishers' Ephemera, 1833-1951 in the Collection of Michael Zinman," [NY: 1996] lists "The Good Child's Delight" and its accompanying samples as item #545, and gives a lengthy collation for it. Our copy contains some of the pink prospectus handbills listed there, and the notice, on a small white slip printed in red ink, regarding the assassination of Pres. McKinley. This notice has been tipped into our copy, as directed in the Arbour description. Item #63938
