With a warm personal inscription by the author to Gordon in the year of publication: in part: "... a constant help in the preparation of this book." With Gordon's bookplate and a note in his hand "The first copy from the press, A.C.G." Publisher's prospectus laid in. Stuart organized the United State Department of the Interior, helped develop national immigration policy, "delayed and almost defeated the secession of Virginia," helped steer the state out of Reconstruction and back into the Union, and was a leading Southern advocate of railroads and good roads.
