Ruffin, a native of Virginia, graduated from Princeton before studying law in North Carolina under Archibald Murphey, commencing his practice in Hillsborough where he was elected to several terms in the legislature, before joining the state Supreme Court in 1829; he served as the court's chief justice, 1833-1852, earning a national reputation for his incisive opinions.
