Front joint at head of volume one starting about 2 in., some general wear to both volumes, some overall age toning and foxing to text. Thomas Jefferson owned this edition, which is actually the first of this title to be printed in America. Signature of Geo[rge] Booker a prominent lawyer from Buckingham Couny, VA and a member of the state senate from 1830-32. Signature of a G. B. Hanes Dec. 21st, 1860. We believe this to be Garland Hanes enlisted as Captain in Co F of the 20th VA Infantry who would later serve in the Confederate bureaucracy. He was briefly a teacher and principal at Buckingham Institute, and by the late 1860s - early 1870s was practicing law. Also present in volume one is the pencil signature of William B. Pettit "Glen Burnie" who also served as a Sergeant in the Confederacy, and there are other signatures from the area. COHEN 4919. SOWERBY 1720. Item #63635
