Eastman, Medical Inspector of the Union Army's 17th Army Corps, noted "Vicksburg 1863" below; Eastman (1824-1900), a native of Maine, graduated from Dartmouth in 1844 and moved to Platteville, Wisconsin, in 1850. Eastman served as Surgeon for the 16th Wisconsin at the beginning of the Civil War, serving in that capacity until named Inspector for the Corps in 1862, mustering out in that capacity in late 1864 after service at Shiloh, Vicksburg, and Atlanta, and in the March to the Sea. With defect noted, a good copy once belonging to a Wisconsin surgeon in the Civil War. Publisher's leather (rubbed, front board detached), with wide gilt and embossed ornamental rules framing the boards, gilt ornaments and title on spine, all edges gilt. (10178). Item #63612
