A graduate of the University of Virginia before the war, Johnson served as chaplain to the 17th Virginia Infantry from first Manassas through Seven Days in 1862, was wounded, and spent the final three years of the war in Lynchburg, ministering to several churches, including an African-American one; his post-war life was spent primarily at various educational institutions in Mississippi. Inscribed by the editor to Frank Klingberg, a fellow historian at the University of North Carolina. Very good.
