Each volume inscribed by the author's son, William Gordon McCabe II, in 1926. McCabe (1841-1920) joined the Richmond Howitzers out of the University of Virginia and served with them through the war, rising to the rank of captain; following the war, he opened a school and became a well-known author, poet, translator, and editor.
