Ewell (1817-1872), though born in Washington, D.C., was raised in Prince William County, Virginia, attended West Point (Class of 1840), served in the West and in the Mexican-American War, and commanded as a general in the C.S.A. from Bull Run until captured shortly before Appomattox, eventually leading a corps.
