Altsheler (1862-1919), one of the most popular writers of juvenile historical fiction of the early 20th century, noted beneath his signature "Presented by the author"; from 1914 to 1916 Altsheler produced a series of eight Civil War titles, each centering on an important military campaign. Nevins I, p. 85: "Charming, highly literate series of reminiscences by a young Confederate who obviously enjoyed his war experiences." Dornbusch II, 1181: "Service in the 1st Virginia Cavalry." In Tall Cotton 52" "Enjoyable record of Confederate service by a young man who fought well and wrote well and knew that the Civil War was the central experience of his generation."
