Hagood (1829-1898), a native of Barnwell, was elected colonel of the 1st S.C. Volunteers as the war began, served at Fort Sumter and the first battle at Manassas and in his home state, before returning to Virginia for the 1864 battles around Richmond to Petersburg; he served as governor of South Carolina, 1880-1882. Nevins I, p. 98: "As much a biography as an autobiography; Gen. Hagood's account of service in South Carolina and Virginia is heavily padded with official and relatively unimportant correspondence."
