Butler (1836-1909) earned command of the 2nd South Carolina cavalry in August, 1862, but soon after commanded a brigade and then a division under both Stuart and Hampton; following the war he served as a U.S. Senator from south Carolina, 1877-1895. Nevins I, p. 64: "Eulogies, recollections, and testimonies from comrades form a hodgepodge of unbalanced information on a South Carolina cavalry regiment." Not in Dornbusch. Turnbull V, p. 54.
