Southern Historical Society Papers. Volumes I, January to June, 1876.

Richmond, VA: Rev. J. William Jones, (1876). The first volume of this long running periodical (ceased publication in 1960). 8vo. (4), 466 pp. Editorial Department: "We send out our first number with the firm conviction that those who are interested in vindicating the truth of Confederate History will sustain [this] enterprise and make it a complete success." Many articles published for the first time from original manuscripts. R.G.H. Kean's copy, with two marginal manuscript additions and elucidations to a letter written by him to the publisher concerning the treatment of prisoners during the war and printed on pages 199-203 of this volume and with a one-page manuscript (approx. 275 words) on the same subject tipped in at page 218 (separated along a central fold). Robert G. H. Kean (1828-1898), a Virginia lawyer, served as chief clerk of the Confederate War Department, 1862-1865, and actively promoted the "Lost Cause of the Confederacy" (i.e., though lost, a heroic fight against great odds) after the war; his posthumously published diary "Inside the Confederate Government" (NY, 1957; In Tall Cotton 105) provides a look from an observer "close to the seat of war: observations are sharp, keen, perceptive and especially revealing of the character and inner workings of government" (Nevins). Nicholson, p. 824. South to Posterity, p. 218. Very good. Later tan buckram, printed paper spine label. (10201). Item #63507
