The 23rd Regiment Massachusetts Infantry mustered into service in Lynnfield, Massachusetts in late September 1961 and travelled to Annapolis, Maryland, where it camped for the balance of that year. As part of John G. Foster's brigade, it joined the expedition to North Carolina in early 1862, taking part in the battle of Roanoke Island on February 8 and New Bern on 14 March, remaining in New Bern for the occupation following that battle, with occasional forays in the vicinity, at Little Washington, Tarboro, and Kinston, White Hall, and Goldsboro, from September through December, until joining an early 1863 expedition to South Carolina. Returning to New Bern, the company aided in raising the siege of "Little Washington" in mid-April, 1863, marched through communities in Beaufort County, then Carteret County in June, Trenton, Cedar Point, and Winton in July, Swan Quarter in September, and Elizabeth City and Edenton in October. Following a transfer of the regiment to Virginia, Co. G participated in a number of actions through Drury's Bluff on 16 May 1864 where it saw 21 members captured. The regiment returned to New Bern in September where it participated in several more small actions, finally mustering out of service in July, 1865.
