Sinclair (1837-1925), a native of Norfolk, Virginia, served aboard the Virginia during the battle with the Monitor and then as a lieutenant under Raphael Semmes on the commerce raider Alabama (after claiming 65 prizes around the world, 1862-1864, it was sunk off Cherbourg in a battle with the USS Kearsarge in 1864); he finished the war on another cruiser in France and was a merchant in Baltimore following the conflict. Nevins II, p. 234: "One of the best accounts; interesting, reliable, comprehensive, and thoughtful; contains brief biographical sketches and muster rolls." Rear hinge cracking, but a good copy.
