Inscribed by Margaret Mitchell, author of "Gone With the Wind," on the front endpaper to an unknown recipient "Merry Christmas to a / Tennessean in a far county. / Margaret Mitchell Marsh / Atlanta, Ga." Nevins II, p. 62: "A carefully documented, detailed study of Forrest's wartime campaigns." Dornbusch III, 2734A. In Tall Cotton 87: "Best researched, most balanced account of Forrest and is, as one would expect one of Henry's books to be, quite readable." Included in "Margaret Mitchell's List," a typescript in the Selznick papers at Georgia listing about 60 titles used as "background for the filming of 'Gone With the Wind' ... one of [39] titles on that list included in 'In Tall Cotton' (cf. "In Tall Cotton," p. xi). Very good copy in a worn dust jacket, with a holiday season presentation from Margaret Mitchell.
