Early printing (i.e., does not state "First Edition" on the copyright page). 8vo. 557, (1) pp. Illustrated from photographs, paintings, facsimiles, etc., plates, portrait plates, maps. Inscribed by Margaret Mitchell, author of "Gone With the Wind," on the front endpaper to an unknown recipient "Merry Christmas to a / Tennessean in a far county. / Margaret Mitchell Marsh / Atlanta, Ga." Nevins II, p. 62: "A carefully documented, detailed study of Forrest's wartime campaigns." Dornbusch III, 2734A. In Tall Cotton 87: "Best researched, most balanced account of Forrest and is, as one would expect one of Henry's books to be, quite readable." Included in "Margaret Mitchell's List," a typescript in the Selznick papers at Georgia listing about 60 titles used as "background for the filming of 'Gone With the Wind' ... one of [39] titles on that list included in 'In Tall Cotton' (cf. "In Tall Cotton," p. xi). Very good copy in a worn dust jacket, with a holiday season presentation from Margaret Mitchell.
