A native of New Jersey, French (1818-1910) graduated from West Point in 1843, served gallantly in the Mexican War, became a planter in Mississippi, served in commands in the East early in the War, and in his home state and Tennessee, 1863-1864, before leading a division at Nashville in December, 1864; following the war he resumed his life as a planter.
