Nichols' copy, with his ownership signature at the head of the title page, dated "Assumption" (the Louisiana parish where Nichols practiced law), and "July 1867" [or 1869?]; Nichols (1834-1912; Governor of Louisiana, 1877-1880 and 1888-1892) commanded a brigade of Louisiana infantry at Chancellorsville where he was severely wounded. Howes C-735. Nevins I, p. 74: "Cooke's most famous volume and the closest thing to an autobiography of his war career; much information on Jackson, Stuart, and other Confederate leaders."
