Wirz (1823-1865) was one of two people convicted and executed for war crimes committed during the Civil War. Harry Houdini's copy, with three of his stamps, one each on front and rear endpapers, and one on an internal leaf. Nevins I, p. 188: "This work greatly expands, and largely supersedes [Chipman's 1891, 89-page pamphlet covering the subject]." Dornbusch III, 626. Nicholson, p. 149 (for the 1891 first edition).
