Boggs (1829-1911), a native of Augusta, Georgia, graduated from West Point in 1853, began the Civil War as an artillery officer and staff officer to Generals Beauregard and Bragg; he also served as chief engineer for the state of Georgia (1862), and then as chief of staff to Kirby Smith until near the end of the conflict.
