Volume one inscribed by the author. Howes F-350. Nevins II, p. 57: "Classic example of the biographical form; exhaustively researched, vividly written, balanced, judicious, and definitive in its portrayal of the Confederacy's greatest soldier." Harwell In Tall Cotton 62: "It is still in print and remains a masterpiece of biography and of military history." Dornbusch II, 2930. Volumes two three, and four are inscribed by a previous owner, but a very good copy of the Pulitzer Prize-winning biography.
