New York: J. T. Lloyd, 1861. Second edition, variant issue (first published in 1859; reprinted several times during the Civil War and after). Lithographed map, 31 1/2 x 51 inches, mounted on linen and folded into a 12mo cloth case, counties colored in various pastel shades, state boundaries colored in deeper red. Maryland and Delaware are included in their entirety (though not in the detail included for Virginia), as are the southern portion of Pennsylvania and the extreme northern portion of North Carolina. Includes the note: "N.B. This is the only map used to plan campaigns in Virginia by Cen. [sic] Scott"; also includes a price list for various issues of this map, for this one "Book form for Army Officers, with linen backs cut for folding." Relief shown by hachures; includes publisher's advertisements along the right margin, and tables for population, steamboat routes, and altitudes, and long notes concerning the making of this map and the state's geological make-up in other margins. Indicated on the map are forts, batteries, "places remarkable for military incidents," towns, with county seats distinguished, roads, railroads, mills, factories, iron works, colleges, churches, rivers and other streams and bodies of water, canals, bridges, ferries, boundaries, and drainage. Modelski 310. OCLC locates 12 copies of the various issues of this map. Quite scare in trade, we find but three copies of the 1861 edition at auction in the past 40 years (ABPC, 1976-2017, and RareBookHub; $1008 for a defective copy in 2007, $1945 in 1999, and $250 in 1984). Some rubbing along the map folds, but very good. Original gilt-stamped cloth folder (corners bumped), rebacked with black morocco, interior spine strengthened with binder's tape. (9865). Item #63126
