Theory of Teaching, with a Few Practical Illustrations, by a teacher.

Boston, (MA): E. P. Peabody, 1841. First edition of the author's first book. 8vo. 128 pp. A series of 24 letters, "part of a real correspondence, begun in order to systemize the writer's own theory and practice ... [some] books must be considered as the conversation of those who have attended to a particular subject, and therefore valuable to others who are ignorant of it. It is as one of this class that the present correspondence claims for itself a reading" (author's preface). A member of Boston's extended Lowell family by marriage, Anna Cabot Lowell (1819-1874) was devoted to the education of children and to literature, publishing in both fields, as well as writing texts in astronomy and geometry. Although relatively common in institutional holdings, rather scarce in trade; we found one copy at auction in the past 40 years (ABPC, 1976-2017) and one other offering, in 1987 (RareBookHub). Old light tideline at base of front joint, else very good. Original brown cloth, printed paper spine label. (9779). Item #63092

Price: $1,500.00
