Princeton, KY: October 28, 1863. Broadside on lined paper. Printed broadside, 10 3/4 x 11 3/4 inches. Akerstrom was seeking veterans who had been "honorably discharged from the service of U.S. of nine months or more service ... liberal bounty of 402 dollars in installments during the service will be paid ... new recruits will receive one hundred dollars ... 1st and 2d Lieutenants of one company to be appointed by the recommendation of the undersigned." The 16th Kentucky Cavalry (Union) was organized September, 1863, at Paducah, Kentucky, and attached to the 2nd Brigade, 2nd Division, Cavalry Corps, Department of the Ohio, until it was transferred to the 5th Division in May, 1864, in which it served until the reorganization in October of that year, before consolidating with the 12th Kentucky, October, 1864. It participated in the campaign against John Hunt Morgan's forces in June, 1864, and later served in campaigns in East Tennessee. This recruiting effort, in Princeton, some 50 miles east of Paducah, took place shortly after the unit's organization. Lt. Akerstrom, then served as an adjutant with the 13th Tennessee Cavalry, was killed in a particularly gruesome manner, at Fort Pillow, in April, 1864. Not in Hummel. Not located on OCLC. Very good.
