Jacksonville, [FL]: The newspaper [M. Whit Smith], January 15, 1862 -- 8 1/2 A.M. First edition (?] of this extra. Printed broadside extra, 9 1/2 x 2 7/8 inches, presenting "breaking" news related to Civil War issues in four reports in nine paragraphs: Possible work toward exchange of prisoners from New York, possible recognition of the Confederacy by England from Washington, news do reinforcements for Burnsides' North Carolina expedition from Annapolis, and news of the fall of Galveston, a move against Nashville, and an attack on New Orleans from Richmond. Jacksonville was occupied by Federal troops several times during the Civil War, but this extra was issued before their first entrance into the city in later 1862. Crandall 5246 (for two different extras held at the Boston Athenaeum). OCLC locates one issue of the newspaper and two extras (AAS holds a copy of the May 7, 1861 issue; Boston Athenaeum holds two extras, 27 July 1861 and 6 February 1862). Small hole in masthead (affecting one letters), some foxing, but a very good example of a previously unrecorded Confederate newspaper extra from Florida. (9853). Item #63081
