A Peep at Coondom [cover title].

(New York: Pickens & Teackle, "Advertising that Advertises"), nd [ca. 1900]. First edition (?). Oblong folio (12 1/4 x 9 1/4 inches). 12 leaves printing 14 illustrations from photographs [rectos only], 11 of the images full-page (6 x 8 inches), the other plate with a triptych (each illustration 2 5/8 x 6 inches); publishing information from rear wrapper. The illustrations picture southern African-Americans at work and leisure, often situated and usually captioned to reinforce typical racial stereotypes of the day. Five of the images are copyrighted (several in 1899) by F.L. Howe, three are copyrighted (one in 1900) by Russell Brothers, Anniston, Alabama (the glass negatives from this business, 1880-1940, are held in the Anniston Public Library); five merely state "copyrighted" and one has no designation. All of the illustrations have brief captions in the lower part of the image. Howe, of Atlanta, Georgia, published a similar title "Dat's Whar de Cotton Grows" in 1899 (we have not been able to locate a copy using the usual resources). Not in LCP/HSP Afro-Americana, Blockson catalogue, or other references and bibliographies consulted. Apparently not recorded on OCLC. Good copy of a stereotypical racist publication of the period. Original printed gray wrappers (soiled and with old tidelines, upper corner of text chewed, not affecting text), tied. (9808). Item #63069
