DESIGN OF THE NATIONAL WASHINGTON MONUMENT, TO BE ERECTED IN THE CITY OF WASHINGTON.

NY: Lith. of Wm. Endicott & Co., nd [ca.1850?]. Broadside (laid down), 65 x 43 cm., depicting Robert Mills' original design for the Washington Monument, including a terrace and pantheon around its base, C.G. Crehen (lithographer?). A horse-drawn chariot decorates the pantheon's terrace roof, the obelisk is decorated with a painting and a star. Other Washington D.C. landmarks are visible in the background of the image, including the Smithsonian Castle, the Capitol, etc. At the left of the picture is a small creek, a sailboat floating along it. Well dressed people stroll around the monument, talking or gazing at the building, one man in the foreground is sketching it. Two small floor plans, labeled "Plan of the Terrace," and "Plan of the Pantheon." Overall toning and old tidelines to lower margins of the broadside, one v-shaped snag alongside the image of the obelisk.
This broadside was issued to acknowledge contributions to the building fund, with a space at the lower right margin for filling in the name of each contributor, in this case "J.S. Lund," who contributed $5 to the fund, signed in ink by the Agent, H. Dickerson [Dickinson?]. At the bottom of the print in a facsimile of handwriting are the words, "Earnestly recommended to the favor of our Countrymen" and beneath that line facsimile signatures of Zachary Taylor, Millard Fillmore, James K. Polk, George Mifflin Dallas, John Quincy Adams, Henry Clay, Albert Gallatin, and Daniel Webster. Item #63058
