Small 4to. xlii, 308 pp. Illustrated from wood engravings, from the press's publications, plates, vignettes, extra illustrated title page. James Catnach (1792-1841) took over his father's failing business, printing in Newcastle and London, and built it into a successful enterprise, specializing in children's chapbooks, ballad poetry, broadsides, catch-pennies, and penny awfuls. Engraved bookplate of Arthur E. Chapman on the front pastedown, some soiling, but a very good untrimmed copy. Original quarter-parchment (rubbed) and boards (rubbed, corners badly bumped). (9554).
