Frances Anne (Fanny) Kemble (1809-1893) was a British actress and author who married an American plantation owner, Pierce Butler, in 1834. Though they divorced in 1847, and Fanny returned to England, she is perhaps best known for her book "Journal of a Residence on a Georgia Plantation in 1838-1839." Her memoir, published during the American Civil War, a "bitter, but important book," became a part of abolitionist literature against the institution of slavery [see: Willingham/Harwell Georgiana 54].
