Heusinger in began WWII helping Germany plan the early invasions, later was promoted temporary Chief of the General Staff of the Army in which capacity he was with Adolph Hitler at Wolf's Lair when the assassination attempt occurred. He was linked to knowing many of the conspirators, but was never directly implicated, though he was no longer part of the heiararchy, after the war in West Germany Intelligence thought he may have been involved in a secret army that veterans of the Wehrmacht and Waffen-SS sought to establish He served West Germany as Chief of Staff of the Federal Armed Forces from 1957-61 and NATO as Chairman of the NATO Military Committee 1963-64.
