THE HISTORY OF THE WESTERN STATES, ILLUSTRATED BY TALES, SKETCHES AND ANECDOTES.

Boston: Ticknor, Reed, and Fields, 1850. Later edition. 16 1/2 cm. 167pp., illus. Brown embossed cloth with gilt stamping on spine. Spine ends worn to block. Very good. Attributions to authorship include Samuel Goodrich and Abel Bowen among others, but Hawkes seems most likely credited as such for another Lambert Lilly in an auction catalog of books of Thomas Field names Hawkes as author. It also appears that though copyrighted 1833, it did not appear in print before 1835 and that edition did not have the illustrations called for on titlepage. It should be noted that western states refer to the Missisippi Valley at the farthest. Item #62738
