Tatham (1752-1819), a native of England, was sent by his father to Virginia to learn the tobacco trade, served in the American army during the Revolution, studied law under William Richardson Davie, practicing in North Carolina, Virginia, and Knoxville, Tennessee, published a book on the tobacco trade in 1800, helped found Lumberton, North Carolina, and completed important surveying tasks in North Carolina and Virginia during the presidential terms of Thomas Jefferson.
