Poinsett (1779-1851), a Charleston native, travelled widely in Europe, served in the U.S. House of Representatives, 1821-1825, as special agent to Chile and Argentina, 1810-1814, as U.S. Minister to Mexico, 1825-1829, and as U.S. Secretary of War, 1837-1841, presiding over the removal of the southern Indians to the west.
