Linton Stephens (1823-1872), brother of Alexander H. Stephens, attended the U. of Georgia and law school at Virginia and Harvard; he served briefly on the Georgia Supreme Court, 1859-1860, along with his brother, cast a no vote at the state secession convention, served briefly as a regimental commander in the Civil War, spent the rest of the war in the state legislature, and resumed his law career following the conflict. Alexander Stephens (1812-1883) was a prominent American politician, first serving in local offices, then in the U.S. House of Representatives, 1843-1859 and 1873-1882, as Vice-President of the Confederate States of America, 1861-1865, and as Governor of Georgia, 1882-1883. Not in De Renne catalogue. A little old insect damage to top and fore-edge, but a good solid copy with a nice association. 20th-century faux-leather, gilt ornaments in corners and center of each board, gilt title and ornaments on spine, leather spine label, marbled endpapers.
