First edition, the first two volumes issued in 1956, the third volume issued separately in 1959. 8vo. 3 volumes: xix, 320; xv, 292; xviii, 406 pp. Volume One: The Formative Years, 1527-1783, from the Spanish Explorations through the American Revolution; Volume Two: The Expanding South, 1750-1825, the Ohio Valley and the Cotton Frontier; Volume Three: The Ante Bellum South, 1825-1860, Cotton, Slavery, and Conflict. Excellent annotations and the standard work on the subject. With the ownership signature of Herbert Clarence Bradshaw on the front endpaper of each volume; Bradshaw (1922-1976), a writer and editorialist for the Durham (N.C.) Morning Herald, served on the N.C. State Commission for the Blind for 18 years, on the advisory board of the Mary Duke Biddle Art Gallery for the blind, and as President of the N.C.
