The Price of Peace and / Good-will / Once it was a Cow, now a Mule and an Automobile / [followed by five paragraphs of text]. Signed in type "Laurence C. Jones / Piney Woods Country Life School / Piney Woods, Miss.".

Piney Woods, MS: The school, nd [1930s or 1940s?]. Printed broadside, 11 x 8 3/8 inches, the title in bold type, all text enclosed within a 3-rule black border. A fund raising letter from the founder and director of the Piney Woods County Life School, attempting to raise money for paying off a demand, as follows: "A few nights ago a white man driving at an intemperate rate of speed ran into one of our cars and smashed up both cars rather badly. He jumped out, pulled out his pistol and handled the boys pretty roughly and demanded that his car be repaired or he would 'kill every -------- nigger in Simpson County.' Although we are right, it would not do to take it to court … we are here only through good will … it seems unreasonable for us to have to pay this, but to continue in friendship and peace it is the only way out." Not recorded on OCLC. Folded as for mailing, but a very good example and a lesson in life in the Jim Crow South. (8651). Item #61631
