First edition. 8vo. vii, 255, (4) pp. Frontispiece portrait of Tattnall (1795-1871), a native of Savannah and a career American naval officer having served in the War of 1812 as a midshipman, the Mediterranean conflicts in the 1820s as a lieutenant, the Mexican War as commander of the "Spitfire," and in the Civil War as senior flag officer of the Georgia navy and captain in the Confederate States Navy, commanding the naval defenses of, first South Carolina and Georgia, then Virginia (see DAB).
