Inscribed on the front endpaper "Madame / Homage of the author / December 1865." Mountain climbing in Switzerland. Neate 837: "From a scientific beginning, [Tyndall] took more and more to the pleasures of mountaineering, his greatest climb being the first ascent of the Weisshorn. He was also a contender for the first ascent of the Matterhorn." Very good copy in a nice binding, perhaps for presentation. Contemporary green morocco (a little rubbed and spotted), gilt, boards framed by thin gilt triple rules, spine richly gilt with ornaments between raised bands, gilt turn-ins, all edges gilt. (#8424).
