Report of The Committee of Agriculture [caption running title]

[Philadelphia: np, 1824]. 12mo. 36pp. Stitched self-wrappered, unopened, untrimmed. Brief manuscript notations on 5 pages. Toned; fold lines at lower fore-edge; leaf 15 loosened and torn in half, but complete; fair. Compilation of reports concerning agricultural protective tariffs made by the U. S. House of Representatives and various officials from the states of New York, Pennsylvania, New Hampshire, Vermont, Connecticut, and Delaware and from the cities of Boston and Philadelphia. Notable names include Thomas Cooper, Oliver Wolcott, Tennessee Governor William Carroll, etc. A manuscript notation within the section entitled Message of [Connecticut] Governor Wolcott states that “This paragraph [indicated within parentheses] to be omitted, if necessary.” Was someone preparing to reprint this particular portion of the pamphlet? Two other annotations within this Message appear to divide the work into sections “A” and “B.” Was a second edition being prepared? Was the annotator possibly Mathew Carey? Per OCLC 4152835: “Compiled by Mathew Carey in Philadelphia in 1824, the pamphlet consists of 13 essays which, according to Carey, “would have had a most beneficial effect in opening the eyes of the public on the subject of the American System ... containing the most cogent of the arguments in its favour ...” (Mathew Carey, Autobiographical sketches. ... Philadelphia, [1829], p. 153.).” This copy includes a small slip of paper, likely a scrap from a Carey circular, folded and glued to make a small document sleeve. Not in American Imprints.
