"Photos, 1952 & 1953, of South Africa (some in Vol. 2, 1951)" [manuscript title on card affixed to endpaper of volume one]

Two notebooks, containing 61 glossy photographs, almost all 8 x 10 inches, from trips to Africa, almost all of game animals, the photos housed in plastic sleeves, interleaved with blank notepaper; six of the photographs were taken on a trip to Iran in 1951, with two of them picturing hunters with a trophy tiger and a trophy leopard, several of these with manuscript captions verso. African animals pictured in the photographs include wildebeest, impala, kudu, antelope, and other horned animals of the plains (17 photographs), zebra (1), hyena (2), giraffe (11), lion (5), elephant (9), baboon (2), hippopotamus (1), and rhinoceros (1), all in their natural habitat; other images include a 20-foot long snake skin extended by four members of the safari, African workers and officials (2), a panorama of a coastal estate in Portugal visited by Grosche in on his 1953 trip, a contact sheet with 22 images of an African fishing dock and industrial plant construction, a modern African village with cars on the street, and the series of six photos taken in Iran, two of wild asses on the plains, the two of the tiger and leopard trophies, one of ancient artistic ruins, and one of Iranians on a village street. Manuscript cover titles for the two notebooks: "South Africa Hunting, Vol. I -- 35 Photos" and "South African Safari, Vol. II -- 26 Photos." Very good. Black cloth notebooks. (#7997). Item #60710
