Eastman (1858-1839), a member of the Santee Dakota Sioux tribe whose mother was the daughter of Seth Eastman, graduated from Dartmouth and the Boston University Medical School; he cared for the Indians following the Wounded Knee massacre, became a well-known lecturer and reformer, and published a number of books dealing with Native American customs.
