Monumental Remains of Georgia

Savannah, (GA): John M. Cooper and Co., 1861. First edition, "Part First" (all published), 1/35 large paper copies (cf. Parrish & Willingham 5527 and 5528). 8vo. 119 pp. Folding plan. Howes J-203. Sabin 36479. Parrish & Willingham 5527 ("25 cm. … edition of 35 copies only"). De Renne catalogue II, p. 634: "Edition of 35 copies [attribution comes from a manuscript note on verso of title-page of Library of Congress copy]." Field 795 (incorrectly calling for 117 pages): "This work is the result of a personal examination of the aboriginal monuments of Georgia, aided by such fortuitous circumstances as seldom fall to the lot of the explorer. These were, the existence of great numbers of unexplored mounds near his residence, the possession of sufficient means to provide the manual labor for their exploration, and a large provision of the taste and zeal for archaeological discoveries, which only can give the requisite endurance of the tedious and often fruitless labor. Whatever Colonel Jones commences to investigate, he is satisfied with nothing less than completeness, of which quality of mind, his works are sufficient evidence." Several old library markings, old tideline through lower corner, some erosion at the stitching, but a good, untrimmed copy (edges a little chipped). Original self-wrappers (very soiled), stitched. (#7531). Item #60417
