Fortification: or, Architecture Military; Unfolding the Principal Mysteries thereof; in the Resolution of Sundry Questions and Problems.

London: Printed for Richard Mount, 1694. Second edition (first published in 1639). 4to (19 cm.). (2, the title page, but lacking the dedication leaf and the preface leaf), [1]-19, 22-37, 40-150, (1 errata) pp. (the irregular pagination is correct and complete, as in the first edition). Three folding plates, many in-text engraved diagrams. Wing 1353a. Cockle 145 (for the first edition): "Up to this time we have had nothing original written on fortification as a science ... Norwood, who, in his youth had seen a little service in the Netherlands, was a teacher of mathematics in London, and had written a treatise on the Doctrine of Triangles, 'suitable to the late Inventions of Logarithms,' which doctrine he has applied in this work to the science of fortification." OCLC locates but two copies of this edition (Michigan, Boston Athenaeum) and eight of the first edition (three in the United States: Yale, Georgia, Penn). Quite scarce in trade, this copy edition has not sold at auction for at least the past 40 years (ABPC, 1976-2017; RareBookHub); only the Macclesfield copy and one other of the first edition have sold at auction during that period. Lower edge of title page trimmed in binding, taking the lower part of the imprint date. With the two leaves noted as lacking, very good otherwise. Disbound, with later plain brown wrappers (very worn and chipped. (9867) $2,500.00. Item #60281
