Inscribed by Lanier on a front endpaper "Judge George William Brown / with the regards of / the author / Baltimore, / May 1880"; Brown (1812-1890) was mayor of Baltimore at the outbreak of the Civil War and was serving as chief judge of the Baltimore courts when this presentation was made.
